Why Isn't My Business Showing Up in ChatGPT?
Cause 1-2: Nothing to quote, nothing to parse
No answer content. Engines quote pages that answer questions directly. If nothing on your site answers "who's the best [service] near me?" in plain language, there's nothing to lift. Check: search your own site for a page that answers your customers' top question in the first 80 words. Fix: answer-first pages, question-phrased headings.
Missing or wrong schema. LocalBusiness and FAQ markup tell engines what you are, where you serve, and what you answer. FAQ-schema content is cited roughly 3x more often in Google AI Overviews (iQDigital, 2026). Check: run any page through Google's Rich Results Test. Fix: LocalBusiness + FAQPage JSON-LD on core pages.
Cause 3-5: Invisible, uncorroborated, or blocked
Not in the Bing index. ChatGPT's search answers retrieve from Bing. Check: search site:yourdomain.com on bing.com — empty means invisible to ChatGPT search. Fix: Bing Webmaster Tools verification, sitemap submission, IndexNow.
Weak corroboration. Engines cross-reference: 71.7% of ChatGPT citations come from pages with organic search presence (GrowingAI, 2026), and directory/review signals matter. Check: does your business appear consistently (same name, address, phone) beyond your own site? Fix: entity cleanup and directory presence.
Blocked crawlers. Check: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot under a Disallow. Many CMS defaults block them silently. Fix: explicit Allow rules for the AI crawlers you want reading you.
Diagnose all five in one minute
The free scan runs your business through five engines and returns your AIR Score with the failing gates flagged. Then fix it yourself with how it works, or have it handled: services. Calibration: the Houston metro median in our published study was 31/100 — being invisible is the norm, which is exactly why fixing it is an edge.
Frequently asked questions
ChatGPT describes my business wrong — is that the same problem?
Same family, different gate. Wrong descriptions usually mean weak or inconsistent corroboration: your entity signals (name, address, services) conflict across the web, so the engine guesses. The fix is entity cleanup plus authoritative answer-first pages the engine can quote instead of inferring.
Does a new website automatically show up in AI answers?
No. New sites start unindexed (both Google and Bing), uncorroborated, and unknown to training data — three of the five gates failed by default. Submitting sitemaps to both engines, enabling IndexNow, and shipping FAQ-schema answer pages from day one shortens the invisible period substantially.
Can I just add my business to ChatGPT directly?
There's no submission form — engines build answers from what they retrieve and corroborate on the open web. That's actually good news: the inputs (indexing, schema, crawler access, content, corroboration) are all things you control. The five causes above are the complete checklist.
Which cause is most common?
In our scanning experience the stack usually fails at multiple gates at once — which is why the Houston metro median in our published study was just 31/100. The cheapest fixes with the fastest effect are usually Bing verification and the robots.txt allowlist; the highest-leverage content fix is FAQ schema.
How do I know when it's fixed?
Measure, don't vibe: re-ask the engines monthly, or use the AIR Score — mention, recommendation, and sentiment across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity, re-measured on schedule. Initial movement typically shows in 2-4 weeks, consistent citation in 60-90 days (iQDigital patterns, 2026).
